The Left Democratic Front (LDF) will take out protest marches to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer in Thiruvananthapuram and election offices in districts on February 2 seeking correction of the reported anomalies in the voters’ list published following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
T.P. Ramakrishnan, LDF convener, told the media here on Saturday that there had been allegations that the SIR was an attempt to indirectly prepare a National Population Register. “The ongoing SIR activities in Kerala are a proof that these charges are true. As many as 24 lakh voters were removed from the rolls. A total of 19.32 lakh people were served notices to produce documents to prove their citizenship,” he said.
Mr. Ramakrishnan said those who were issued notices included people who voted in the recent Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Hearing procedures were yet to be completed in many such cases. The voters were being asked to produce documents showing the date of birth and place of birth of even their parents, he claimed.
Mr. Ramakrishnan said many ineligible people had found their names included on the draft voters’ list and a large number of eligible voters had been excluded. Many people from other States who were not even working here had been included on the list. The final list is supposed to be released on February 21. Mr. Ramakrishnan demanded that the voters be given at least two weeks to correct the anomalies on the list.
Meanwhile, replying to queries, the LDF convener claimed that there was no anti-incumbency feeling against the State government. He claimed that this was evident from the responses from people during the ongoing house visit campaign undertaken by Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists and leaders to gauge public perception of the government. “If the people point out any flaws in the functioning of the government, we are always willing to correct them. We don’t need any public relations agency to get the people’s opinion,” Mr. Ramakrishnan added.
