IPFT renews Tipraland statehood demand at Sixth Schedule Day rally

Agartala: The Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the ruling BJP, held a rally and public meeting in Agartala to mark Sixth Schedule Day on Sunday, using the occasion to reiterate its demand for a separate Tipraland state.

The programme was organised at Mara Chowmuhani, where IPFT leaders, workers and supporters gathered for the public meeting. Before the event, party supporters took out a procession from the North Gate area and marched through parts of Agartala before reaching the venue, organisers said.

Addressing the gathering, IPFT leaders renewed their call for Tipraland, arguing that greater constitutional safeguards are necessary to protect the rights, interests and identity of Tripura’s indigenous communities.

The leaders also highlighted the relevance of the Sixth Schedule to the protection and governance of indigenous communities, linking the provision to their broader demand for stronger constitutional safeguards.

IPFT president Prem Kumar Reang and Tripura minister Shukla Charan Noatia were among those who attended the programme, along with other party leaders and supporters.

The observance combined the party’s commemoration of Sixth Schedule Day with its longstanding political demand for a separate Tipraland state.

The IPFT has continued to advocate greater constitutional protection for indigenous people in Tripura and has kept the Tipraland demand at the centre of several of its political programmes.

The rally comes as the IPFT remains part of the ruling alliance with the BJP in Tripura.
