India has issued a fresh Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), temporarily restricting a 2,530-km corridor over the Indian Ocean Region for a likely long-range missile test scheduled between August 6 and 7, 2026. The notification, extending from sea level to unlimited altitude, indicates preparations for the trial of a strategic missile system by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Strategic Forces Command (SFC).
The launch is expected to take place from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast, India’s primary integrated test range for missile development and strategic weapons trials.
WHAT IS A NOTAM?
A NOTAM is a formal advisory issued to pilots, airlines and maritime operators warning of activities that may pose a risk to air and sea traffic. In the case of missile tests, the designated airspace and adjoining sea corridor are temporarily closed to ensure the safety of aircraft and ships during the launch and flight.
Defence analysts often view the size of a NOTAM corridor as an indicator of the missile’s range. A corridor stretching more than 2,500 km is generally associated with strategic-class systems rather than short- or medium-range battlefield missiles.
While the Ministry of Defence has not disclosed the missile scheduled for testing, experts believe the trial could involve an advanced Agni-series intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), potentially equipped with an upgraded payload or Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology.
Another possibility is the K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), a key component of India’s sea-based nuclear deterrent.
A PART OF SERIES OF PLANNED TESTS
The latest planned test follows a series of major missile trials conducted by DRDO and the Strategic Forces Command over the past three months.
On May 8, India tested an advanced Agni missile fitted with MIRV technology from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, demonstrating the ability to strike multiple targets with a single missile. A routine user trial of the Agni-1 short-range ballistic missile followed on May 22.
In June, DRDO successfully conducted multiple tests of its Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system capable of intercepting long-range ballistic missile threats, alongside the maiden trial of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR). On June 15, the indigenous Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) successfully struck a target around 1,000 km away.
Most recently, on July 23, India carried out the maiden flight test of the Kusha Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM).
The upcoming trial, given the scale of the NOTAM, is widely expected to further strengthen India’s long-range strategic strike capability and reinforce its deterrence posture in the Indian Ocean Region, although the exact missile will only be confirmed after the test is conducted.
