Widespread flooding has been reported from various parts of Thrissur following heavy rain that lashed the district on Monday(August 4, 2025), with several residential areas submerged and daily life thrown into chaos. Localities including Saktan Nagar, M.G. Road, Aquatic complex line, and Paliyam road, Ikkanda Warrier Road and North bus stand area in the city experienced severe waterlogging.
In Aquatic line, floodwaters entered several homes, causing significant damage to household appliances and furniture. Many families were evacuated and shifted to safer locations. Although these areas witnessed flooding last year as well, residents say that it only took two hours of rain this time for water to enter their homes. Residents blamed flawed drainage systems and canal blockages for the recurring issue.
Chelakkara, Palappilly, Puthur, Vettukadu, and Ezhamkallu also reported flooding in residential areas, leaving roads there submerged. Waterlogging at Mulangunnathukavu on Thrissur-Shoranur Road led to traffic snarls. The heavy rainfall also exposed numerous potholes on roads, increasing the risk of accidents.
Fishing boats that ventured into the sea defying the warning were caught in rough winds around 8 a.m. but managed to return safely to the Munakkakadavu Harbour and other nearby shelters.
In Pothan Chira, six houses were reportedly flooded. The downpour also triggered gushing of water from a nearby rubber estate into the surrounding houses in Palappilly. Varantarappalli witnessed waterlogging in multiple areas as the rain intensified.
Control room
Meanwhile, in response to the severe rain-related damages reported in Puthur grama panchayat over the last two days, Revenue Minister K. Rajan convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation. The Minister announced that round-the-clock control rooms have been set up at the Thrissur Taluk Office and the Puthur panchayat. For emergencies, residents can contact the Thrissur taluk emergency operations centre at 0487-2331443.
Instructions were given to ensure the readiness of ambulances, the fire force, electricity, and Irrigation departments. To support immediate relief efforts, ₹1 lakh has been sanctioned for the procurement of emergency equipment, and an additional ₹1 lakh for setting up relief camps.
The Minister directed the DFO to immediately remove fallen trees and instructed the panchayat secretary to take steps under the Disaster Management Act to cut down trees that pose a threat to public safety. To ease water flow near Ezhamkallu Church, the canal was deliberately breached. At the Puthur Zoological Park, canal blockages will be cleared urgently, as per instructions given to the Zoo Director.
