The torrential rain in the hill city for the last two days has increased the difficulties. In this monsoon, the rain has broken the record of the last eight years. 1683 mm of rainfall has been recorded in just three months of monsoon. Earlier in 2017, this figure was recorded as 2541 mm.
Due to continuous rain, the drains of the city are overflowing. Due to which the water level of the lake is also increasing rapidly. After the water level of the lake reached 88 feet, the drainage gates have been opened with full capacity. If it rains like this, then there could be a situation of the lake overflowing like in 2021.
The average of monsoon rainfall has fallen in the last decade. But before this monsoon, the sequence of intermittent rains had started from April itself. It kept raining throughout the monsoon. The torrential rain that has been happening for the last two days has broken the record of the last eight years.
According to the information received from the lake control room, 1683 mm of rainfall has been recorded from June 1 to September 2 while 1935 mm rainfall has been recorded from January. Which is the highest in the last eight years. Earlier in 2017, 2541 mm of rainfall was recorded in the monsoon while 3046 mm of rainfall was recorded from January to September 2.
The drains of the city are overflowing due to continuous rain. Due to recharge of natural water sources, a large amount of water is reaching Naini Lake. The water level of the lake has increased to 88 feet. As a precaution, the irrigation department has opened the drainage gates of the lake to their full capacity of 18 inches.
However, this water level is currently one foot less than the highest water level. But the speed at which the water level is increasing has also increased the concerns of the irrigation department. The lake overflowed during the heavy rains in the month of October in 2021. The water of the lake had filled up the road adjacent the lake.
