Biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak organised a ‘Nature Learning cum Biodiversity Documentation’ programme at Khanapara Adarsha LP School in Guwahati, aimed at introducing school students to local biodiversity and nature-based learning.
The programme saw participation from students and teachers and focused on helping young learners understand their immediate natural surroundings through hands-on activities. Organisers said the initiative sought to address the growing gap between children and nature in urban areas such as Guwahati.
Aaranyak has been working on nature-based education initiatives to promote environmental awareness, emotional well-being and social responsibility among children. The programme at the school was part of these ongoing efforts.
The session was led by Aaranyak’s Young Professionals under the guidance of Jayanta Kumar Pathak, Assistant Director of the Environment Education and Capacity Building Division. Students were encouraged to observe their surroundings and identify different species of plants and animals. They were also introduced to basic field tools, including an anemometer, to demonstrate how scientific instruments are used in environmental studies.
One of the activities included nature journaling, where students documented their observations through drawings and written notes. According to organisers, this exercise was intended to improve observation skills while encouraging reflection and creativity.
The programme was facilitated by Young Professionals Bhanita Deka, Dipankar Mazumder, Hrishita Nath, Jyotishmita Kashyap and Kaushik Ranjan Saikia. Coordination support was provided by Prajnyan Sarma, Project Coordinator, and Andrew Roy, Young Professional.
Aaranyak acknowledged the cooperation of the school’s Head Teacher, Namita Baishya, and faculty members Sabina Zesmin and Tarpana Phukan in organising the programme.
Separately, Aaranyak has been implementing awareness programmes on water conservation in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha Assam, Kamrup Metro, as part of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). Under this initiative, Andrew Roy has been involved in sessions aimed at improving students’ understanding of water sources and the need for conservation.
The programme was conducted under the “Mobius Young Climate Leaders for Himalayan Development – North East India Initiative”, which is being implemented by Aaranyak in partnership with YouthNet and the Mobius Foundation.
