Guwahati: Google is expanding its Gemini AI assistant to vehicles equipped with “Google built-in”, replacing the existing Google Assistant with a more conversational in-car system aimed at improving hands-free interaction and reducing distractions while driving.
The rollout marks Google’s latest push to integrate artificial intelligence more deeply into everyday consumer technology, including connected vehicles.
The update comes shortly after General Motors confirmed that Gemini will be introduced in nearly four million vehicles from model year 2022 onwards. The rollout will cover brands including Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC.
However, the rollout is not expected to remain limited to General Motors vehicles. Google plans to expand Gemini support to a wider range of compatible cars over time.
The feature will first launch in the United States with support for English, and will also reach existing vehicles through over-the-air software updates.
Cars with Google built-in have been available since 2020, but Gemini introduces a more natural and conversational interface compared to the command-based interactions currently offered by Google Assistant.
Drivers will be able to ask more detailed questions while navigating. For instance, users can search for restaurants along a route and follow up with queries related to parking availability, menus or dietary preferences.
Beyond navigation, Gemini will support a range of in-car functions, including adjusting temperature settings, providing real-time directions, recommending music, summarising incoming messages and helping users draft replies through voice commands.
Google said the system is designed to minimise distractions by allowing drivers to control more vehicle functions hands-free.
The company is also introducing “Gemini Live” in beta, enabling real-time and open-ended voice conversations inside the vehicle.
Drivers can activate the feature by saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk,” or through on-screen controls. The feature is expected to support tasks such as brainstorming ideas, asking questions or carrying out conversational interactions during travel.
Users signed into their Google accounts in compatible vehicles are expected to receive prompts to upgrade once the rollout begins.
Google also said future updates would further integrate Gemini with services such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Home as the company expands its AI ecosystem across devices and platforms.
