Germany’s second-seeded Alexander Zverev clinched his maiden Grand Slam title by defeating 10th-seeded Flavio Cobolli in the French Open final held on June 7. Zverev secured the championship by beating Cobolli 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1. Prior to this, Zverev had been a runner-up at the Australian Open and the US Open. This marked the second French Open final of his career, and this time, he succeeded in claiming victory.
Flavio Cobolli Committed Numerous Errors in the First Set
In the opening set, Italy’s young player Flavio Cobolli, playing his first Grand Slam final appeared quite shaky and committed a series of errors, which Alexander Zverev capitalized on. However, Cobolli refused to give up and staged a brilliant comeback to win the second set 6-4. Although he lost the third set, he put up a fierce fight in the fourth, winning it via a tie-breaker to keep the match thrilling. In the fifth set, however, Zverev dominated Cobolli from the very beginning. Zverev won the final set 6-1, making history in the process.
Zverev Had Previously Lost Three Grand Slam Finals
Before winning the 2026 French Open, Alexander Zverev had reached three Grand Slam finals but had faced defeat in each of them. He first lost the 2020 US Open final to Dominic Thiem in a grueling five-set match. Subsequently, he was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in the 2024 French Open final, which also went to five sets. Then, in the 2025 Australian Open final, Jannik Sinner defeated him in straight sets.
How Much Prize Money Did Zverev Receive?
In the 2026 French Open tennis tournament, equal prize money was awarded to the winners of both the men’s and women’s categories. Young Russian player Mirra Andreeva won the women’s singles title, receiving €2.8 million (approximately ₹30.80 crore) in prize money. Meanwhile, Germany’s Alexander Zverev secured the men’s singles title by defeating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli, thereby also receiving ₹30.80 crore. The prize money awarded in this tennis tournament exceeds—by approximately ₹10 crore—the prize money given to the winning team of the world’s biggest cricket league, the IPL. RCB received ₹20 crore after winning the IPL 2026 title.
