Kothagudem: Four Maoists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Gadchiroli district on Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh borders.

According to police, an anti-naxal operation was launched on Thursday based on information about the presence of Maoists near the newly opened Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Kawande. Led by additional SP Ramesh and 12 parties of C60 (300 commandos) and a CRPF component took part in the search operation from Kawande and Nelgunda towards the banks of Indravati despite heavy rainfall.

On Friday morning when the security forces cordoned the area and were searching the river bank, Maoists started firing at the police teams. In retaliation the security forces opened fire and the firing continued for about two hours intermittently.

After firing was ceased, police recovered the bodies of four Maoists, one automatic self-loading rifle, two .303 rifles and one Barmar. Along with this, walkie talkies, camping equipment, Naxal literature and others were recovered from the spot. Search operation for Maoists was continuing in the area. The dead Maoists were yet to be identified, police said.
