PM Addresses UN

The Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, called for a global crusade against hunger, racism, terrorism, and the nuclear arms race. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Gandhi urged member nations to fight against “starvation in a world of plenty”, denounce racism in the age of equality and human dignity, and free the world of nuclear weapons. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi also said that no chance for peace should be lost. “All of us have a collective interest in the preservation of the planet,” he added in his brief but eloquent speech. The assembly celebrations opened with an address by the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, followed by the Chinese Prime Minister, Zhao Ziyang.

N-talks with Pak

An Indian spokesman denied reports that India and Pakistan had agreed to start “technical negotiations” to reassure each other about the peaceful nature of their nuclear programmes. No such understanding had been reached between the two countries, the spokesman said. The reports had appeared in The New York Times.

AASU Asks for Time

The All Assam Students’ Union urged the Election Commission to extend the time for the disposal of claims and objections in the current revision of rolls going on in the state. In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Election Commissioner, the new AASU president and the general secretary said they were disturbed over the manner in which the claims and objections were being disposed of.

Arjuna Awards

Star athletes P T Usha and Shiny Abraham, cricketer Ravi Shastri, hockey centre-forward Zafar Iqbal, and Everester Bachendri Pal are among the Arjuna Award winners for the year 1983–84. The awards will be presented by President Zail Singh.
