Former AASU GS Shankar Jyoti Baruah joins BJP

Guwahati: Former All Assam Students’ Union general secretary Shankarjyoti Baruah formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on January 24 at the Chief Minister’s Office in Basistha, marking a notable political development in Assam.

The joining programme was attended by senior BJP leaders, including the party’s Assam president, Cabinet ministers and Union ministers. Party leaders said Baruah’s induction would strengthen the BJP’s organisational base, particularly in Upper Assam, where he is considered to have significant influence.

Welcoming Baruah into the party, BJP leaders described him as a prominent figure with a wide support base and said discussions with him had been underway for some time. They expressed confidence that his entry would bolster the party’s reach beyond traditional political constituencies and help connect with youth and civil society groups.

During the programme, BJP leaders highlighted the party’s organisational expansion at both the national and state levels, citing its growing membership and electoral footprint across the country. They said the party’s focus remained on governance, development and strengthening grassroots institutions in Assam.

Several other personalities from diverse backgrounds also joined the BJP on the same day. These included former college administrators, artists, youth leaders, retired government officials and former office-bearers of student and community organisations. Among them were former leaders of the All Assam Students’ Union from districts such as Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Majuli, as well as representatives from cultural, educational and social organisations.

Party functionaries said the induction of leaders from different sections of society reflected the BJP’s ongoing efforts to broaden its organisational base ahead of upcoming political engagements. The joining programme was coordinated by the BJP’s State leadership and attended by senior party office-bearers and organisational representatives.
