Festive shine in Shahganj as Diwali shoppers opt for Indian decor | Prayagraj News

Prayagraj: The narrow lanes of Shahganj, better known as the Sangam city’s electrical goods hub, are wearing a distinctly festive look as Diwali approaches. Shops that usually cater to electricians, traders and customers from smaller markets across Prayagraj district have transformed into a colourful display of lights, decorative lamps and festive accessories, drawing residents looking to brighten up their homes. From long strings of jhalars to artificial candles, chandeliers and LED skirtings, the market is offering an assortment of products in different designs and price ranges. But this year, shopkeepers say, the most noticeable change is the growing preference for Indian-made decorative items over cheaper Chinese alternatives. The shift is visible even though locally manufactured products generally cost more. Customers are increasingly willing to pay more for products they believe are sturdier and can be used for several festive seasons. For many buyers, the preference also carries a sense of supporting domestic manufacturers.Shopkeeper Rakesh Kumar said Indian-made jhalars have emerged as one of the most sought-after products. A typical indigenous jhalar measuring more than 65 metres is priced between Rs 240 and Rs 310. Unlike many low-cost alternatives, its bulbs can be replaced if damaged, making the product more economical over time.Another popular item this Diwali is 3D LED skirting, which is being used to decorate doors, windows, balconies and walls. Although the market has both Indian and imported variants, the Indian version, fitted with copper wire, is finding more buyers despite being costlier. Customers reportedly prefer it for its better durability and reliability. The preference for Indian products is not, however, limited to functionality. Traders say a growing awareness about locally manufactured goods and a desire to support domestic businesses are influencing buying decisions.“When the decision to decorate our building was being taken, every household voted for Indian jhalars for the apartment,” said Gopal, secretary of Tara Tower of Shervani Legacy.
