Farmers in Nirmal district staged a massive protest on Thursday under the leadership of BJP Legislature Party leader and Nirmal MLA Eleti Maheshwar Reddy against the delay in crop procurement by the state government. The agitation was held in front of the RDO office along the national highway, drawing large participation from farmers across the region.
As part of the protest, farmers brought harvested paddy and maize in tractors and poured the produce onto the highway to express their anger over the procurement delays. Protesters raised slogans against the Congress government and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, accusing the administration of failing to support farmers during the procurement season.
Addressing the gathering, Maheshwar Reddy alleged that despite large-scale cultivation in the state, the government had failed to fulfil its procurement promises. He said that while around 1.40 lakh metric tonnes of grain had been cultivated, the government, which claimed it would procure 90 lakh metric tonnes, had so far purchased only 15 lakh tonnes.
The MLA criticised the Chief Minister and ministers, accusing them of neglecting farmers’ issues and focusing more on commissions than on resolving procurement problems. He said farmers across Telangana were struggling to sell their produce and were being forced to plead with officials for support.
He further alleged that the Revanth Reddy-led government, which claims to be farmer-friendly, had completely ignored the welfare of cultivators. Maheshwar Reddy warned that if the government continued to delay procurement, farmers would intensify their agitation and force the administration to purchase the grain through united protests.
Later, the MLA, along with farmers, submitted a memorandum to RDO Ratna Kalyani at the Nirmal RDO office demanding immediate procurement of paddy and maize.
Police personnel were deployed in large numbers in view of the protest to maintain law and order.
