Expressway to be built from Bareilly to Haldwani; demarcation begins

To transform the landscape of road transport between Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced work on a major project. A plan has been formulated to construct a modern ‘Greenfield Expressway’ extending from Bareilly to Haldwani. Spanning approximately 100 kilometers, this expressway will not only connect the two cities but also emerge as a vital trade corridor between UP and Uttarakhand. Preliminary work regarding the demarcation of land for the project has already begun, generating immense enthusiasm among the local residents.

What is a Greenfield Expressway?

The most significant feature of this expressway is its ‘Greenfield’ status. This implies that, rather than widening existing old and congested routes, it will be constructed entirely on fresh land along a brand-new alignment. Bypassing densely populated urban areas, the expressway will traverse through agricultural fields and open spaces. This will not only spare travelers from traffic congestion but also save approximately one to one-and-a-half hours in travel time for the 100-kilometer journey.

According to NHAI’s plan, this new expressway will be seamlessly integrated with the Bareilly-Moradabad Highway. A major benefit of this strategic linkage will be that vehicles arriving from Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh can directly access this expressway—thereby heading toward Uttarakhand—without getting stuck within the city limits of Bareilly. This interlinking is poised to prove a ‘game-changer’ in connecting the major cities of Uttar Pradesh with the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.

Land Acquisition Process Gains Momentum Alongside Demarcation

With the commencement of land demarcation work for the project, it has become evident that the NHAI has all but finalized the route alignment. Once the demarcation process is complete, a formal notification for land acquisition will be issued. Officials have stated that this expressway will be designed as a fully ‘Controlled-Access’ corridor, prioritizing both safety and high-speed travel. Additionally, an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and various public amenities will be developed along the length of the expressway. The completion of this project will accelerate the economic development of Bareilly, and the city will strengthen its identity as a major transport hub.
