Situated at an altitude of 3,680 metres (12,073 feet) above sea level, near the foothills of Chandrashila, Tungnath is one of the most revered Shiva temples in Uttarakhand. The temple was beautifully decorated with flowers ahead of the closing ceremony, which was conducted at an auspicious time in accordance with established religious traditions.
The temple priest performed the prescribed prayers and rituals, while a large number of devotees gathered to witness the occasion and offer their prayers to Baba Tungnath. The temple premises echoed with devotional chants, creating a spiritually charged atmosphere during the ceremonial closure.
Tungnath holds immense religious and spiritual importance as the third among the five sacred Panch Kedar shrines. According to Hindu mythology and religious belief, the arms of Lord Shiva are worshipped at this temple.
Every year, thousands of pilgrims and tourists from across India and abroad undertake the journey to Tungnath to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and experience the spiritual beauty of the Himalayas.
With the temple now closed for the winter, the deity’s traditional worship will continue at the Markandeya Temple in Makkumath until the shrine reopens next pilgrimage season.
