Just ahead of the mayoral election on Friday, open dissent erupted within the Congress in Thrissur, with Congress councillor Laly James publicly airing her dissatisfaction and making explosive allegations. Ms. James, elected as councillor from Lalur division, claimed that the mayoral post in the Thrissur Corporation was effectively sold in exchange for money, accusing the district party leadership of sidelining her because she did not have the required funds. Ms. James won with the maximum majority in the Corporation.
Ms. James also levelled allegations against UDF mayoral candidate Niji Justin, questioning the manner in which the candidature was finalised. According to her, the decision was not based on merit or support within the party, but on financial considerations. Ms. James alleged that Dr. Niji Justin approached party leaders with a “cash box” to be considered for the Mayor’s post.
She further claimed that the majority of elected Congress councillors had proposed her name for the post, asserting that she enjoyed wider backing within the party ranks. Despite this support, she was ignored due to her inability to pay the required amount, she alleged.
Allegations denied
However, Dr. Justin, who later took charge as the Mayor, denied the allegations. Responding to the controversy, she said the party leadership would give an appropriate reply to the charges raised.
The public disclosure triggered a political storm within the district Congress, ahead of the mayoral election, placing the leadership under intense scrutiny. The party has sought explanation from Ms. James.
Meanwhile, Ms. James warned that if the party formally seeks explanation from her she will come up with more revelations about party leaders. She named DCC president Joseph Tajet and former Mayor Rajan Pallan in her remarks.
