A sudden storm and heavy rain left a trail of destruction in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district on Wednesday, killing seven people, including two children, and injuring at least 21 others.
Officials said multiple areas across the district — including Baldirai, Haliyapur, Akhand Nagar, Bandhua Kala, and Kudwar — were hit by strong winds and rain, leading to house collapses, falling trees, and other accidents.
Among the victims was 20-year-old Mahendra Tiwari from Kudwar, who died on the spot after an electricity pole fell on him. He had returned home just 10 days earlier from out of town for his sister’s wedding, scheduled for May 7, and was on his way to attend a pre-wedding function when the incident occurred.
In Baldirai, two people lost their lives. Eight-year-old Mahima, a Class 3 student, died after bricks fell on her house, while 58-year-old Rambaran was killed when a tree collapsed on his home. His wife sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment.
In Haliyapur, 35-year-old Rita, a mother of three, died after a mud wall and thatched roof collapsed. In Akhand Nagar, eight-year-old Sureman was killed on the spot, while two others were seriously injured and shifted for treatment.
In separate incidents, 40-year-old Sushma Gupta died after a tree fell near her house in Bandhua Kala, and 70-year-old Kewala Devi was killed when a mud wall collapsed in Kurebhar.
Several others were injured in different parts of the district, with at least 21 people admitted to hospitals. Local health centres are treating the injured, officials said.
The storm also caused significant damage to infrastructure. A toll plaza on the Purvanchal Expressway suffered heavy damage, leading to disruptions for several hours.
District Magistrate Inderjeet Singh expressed grief over the loss of lives and directed officials to provide immediate relief to affected families. He ordered that compensation from the State Disaster Response Fund be disbursed within 24 hours.
Teams from the revenue and health departments have been deployed for relief and rescue operations, and an assessment of the damage is underway.
The district administration has also urged residents to follow weather advisories and remain indoors during severe conditions.
