Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph, MLA, has accused the CPI(M) of unleashing widespread violence against the public following its defeat in the local body elections. He alleged that several incidents have occurred across the State, proving that the party has not accepted the people’s verdict and continues to act with arrogance.

In a statement, Mr. Joseph said a series of “fascist acts” have been reported, including the vandalism of Mahatma Gandhi statues, bomb attacks on the Indira Gandhi statue, armed assaults on houses using swords and machetes and the intimidation of political opponents. Such actions, he added, were a grave insult to the State’s democratic and secular values.

The Congress leader also expressed strong suspicion that the violence taking place in the home turf of the Chief Minister and the CPI(M) State secretary has the tacit support of the party leadership. The police have remained mute spectators in many incidents, he alleged.

The Gandhi statue near the Ramanthali cultural centre in Payyannur was vandalised. The incident, he claimed, is not the first such incident in Payyannur. In addition, the UDF election committee office in Payyannur municipality was vandalised, and a bomb was hurled at the house of UDF candidate P.K. Suresh.

Following the CPI(M)’s defeat in Panoor municipality, UDF workers were allegedly attacked on a large scale. Congress offices were also attacked in other places, including in Ulikkal in Kannur, Eramala in Vadakara, and Thuruthimukku. Congress workers and even police personnel came under attack in Bedadka in Kasaragod.

He also cautioned that the situation could spiral out of control if immediate action is not taken. He added that the Congress is committed to protecting its workers.
