Collector A. Shyam Prasad on Saturday called for concerted efforts of the Transport, Police, Education, and Roads and Buildings departments to improve road safety and reduce accidents across Sri Sathy Sai district. He was addressing the district-level Road Safety Coordination Committee meeting here, and urged the officials to aim for zero fatalities by enforcing road safety rules and identifying accident-prone areas.
Between January and September this year, 429 road accidents occurred in the district, resulting in 255 casualties and 483 injuries. Of these, 233 were fatal and 196 were non-fatal cases. “Top priority should be given to set up signboards and rumble strips at black spots, installation of blinkers and flashing lights wherever necessary. Improving lighting along national highways is crucial to prevent accidents,” he said, insisting on regular jungle clearance at curves and upkeep of truck lay-bys, particularly at Palasamudram Cross, to avoid collisions.
The Collector directed the managements of all private educational institutions to fit rearview cameras to their vehicles carrying students. All school and college buses should obtain certificates from the concerned authorities. Mr. Shyam Prasad further directed the officials to have strict enforcement against helmetless riders and motorists using mobile phones while driving.
Meanwhile, SP S. Satish Kumar cautioned that drunk-driving offenders would face serious legal consequences, apart from cancellation of their licences. He highlighted the efficacy of signboards, rumble strips, and the use of speed guns to curb reckless driving and over-speeding.
