Imphal: More than 60 wild bird species were recorded during the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) held on the morning of February 14, 2026, at the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal.
The Central Forest Division, Government of Manipur, organised the event in collaboration with Wildlife Explorers Manipur and the Kangla Board. The programme began at 7:00 am and drew enthusiastic participation from forest officials, members of Wildlife Explorers, wildlife enthusiasts and volunteers. The initiative aimed to generate valuable data on bird populations and distribution patterns.
Organisers also sought to raise awareness about urban biodiversity and encourage public participation in bird monitoring. Participants recorded a wide range of species within the fort premises, highlighting the ecological importance of this green space in the heart of Imphal. The GBBC is a global citizen-science initiative that enables birdwatchers to help scientists understand how birds are responding to environmental changes.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society launched the project in 1998. It became the first online participatory science initiative to collect and display real-time data on wild birds.GBBC India forms part of the annual four-day global event held every February.
Participants count birds in their local areas for at least 15 minutes and upload their observations through eBird.
