OpenAI has released a major update for ChatGPT that benefits both free and paid users. This update introduces unlimited text chat for free users, a new ‘GPT-5.6 Luna’ model, and a special ‘Think’ button. OpenAI stated that this update was designed with its large user community in mind; according to the company, approximately one billion people use ChatGPT every week.

Previously, users on the ‘Free’ and ‘Go’ tiers faced interruptions upon reaching specific chat limits. They would receive notifications prompting them to either wait for the limit to reset or upgrade to a paid plan to continue using the service. OpenAI is now removing these limits entirely. Starting next week, ‘GPT-5.6 Luna’ will become the default AI model for ‘Free’ and ‘Go’ users, replacing ‘GPT-5.5’.

With this model upgrade, rate limits for text chats on these tiers will be lifted, allowing for uninterrupted conversations. A new ‘Think’ button has also been added; pressing it prompts the model to deliberate more deeply and extensively on complex questions. While text limits have been removed, standard restrictions regarding file uploads, image generation, and voice chat remain unchanged.

Rollout Details

This update is available across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. However, OpenAI has clarified that these changes apply only to the standard ChatGPT chat experience; the ‘GPT-5.6 Sol’ model used in Codex and ChatGPT Work will remain unaffected.

What changes are in store for Plus and Pro users?

Plus and Pro subscribers will begin receiving the updated ‘GPT-5.6 Sol’ model starting August 7. A key feature of this model is that it integrates both ‘instant’ and ‘thinking’ response capabilities into a single model. This eliminates the need for users to switch between different models for different tasks.
