CBI seizes cash, luxury properties from arrested NHIDCL executive in Guwahati

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has recovered assets worth several crores from the possession of an Executive Director and Regional Officer of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) in Guwahati, who was arrested earlier this week for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh.

The officer, arrested on 14 October while allegedly taking the bribe from a private individual, was accused of demanding illegal gratification in exchange for granting a favourable extension of time and issuing completion certificates related to NHIDCL’s highway projects in Assam, including the four-laning of National Highway 37 between Demow and Moran Bypass.

Following the arrest, the CBI conducted searches at multiple locations linked to the accused in Guwahati, Ghaziabad and Imphal. The raids led to the recovery of Rs 2.62 crore in cash, along with documents showing large-scale investments in real estate and luxury assets.

According to officials, the seized properties include nine premium apartments, one office space, and three residential plots in Delhi NCR; one apartment and one residential plot in Bengaluru; and four apartments along with two residential plots in Guwahati. Investigators also found documents for two homestead plots and one agricultural land parcel in Imphal West.

In addition, the CBI recovered records of six high-end vehicles, two luxury watches valued in lakhs, and a 100-gram silver bar. Officials said many of the properties appeared to be undervalued and are now under verification.

The case was registered following source information against the NHIDCL official and two representatives of a private firm. Both the executive and one private individual were produced before the Special Judge, CBI Court, Guwahati, and remanded to three days of police custody.
