Agartala: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday appointed first-time MLA Abhishek Debroy as the new president of its Tripura Pradesh committee, ending uncertainty over the state unit leadership.
The 44-year-old legislator from the Matabari Assembly constituency in Gomati district succeeds Rajib Bhattacharjee. Bhattacharjee’s term ended in August last year, and he was later elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Before this appointment, Debroy served as the BJP’s Gomati district president and was later included in the party’s state committee. He has been active in organisational work and youth-related activities within the party.
Debroy started his political career with the Congress and joined the BJP in 2017. He later worked in the party’s youth wing and took part in local body elections.
In 2023, the BJP fielded him from the Matabari constituency in the Assembly elections, where he won the seat.
Party sources said Debroy was active in relief and rehabilitation work during the 2024 floods in several affected areas. He has been associated with organisational activities at the grassroots level.
The selection of a new state president had been pending for several months due to internal discussions within the party. Debroy’s name was finalised after consultations with party leadership.
After the announcement, party workers in parts of Gomati district celebrated the decision. Workers across the state also welcomed the appointment.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha congratulated Debroy and expressed confidence in his leadership.
Speaking to a television channel, Debroy thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP national leadership, and the Chief Minister for the appointment.
He said his focus would be on strengthening the organisation at the booth and grassroots levels.
When asked about the next Assembly elections, he said it was too early to comment.
Debroy is a graduate in pharmaceutical science and will now lead the BJP organisation in Tripura ahead of upcoming political developments.
