Agartala: Tripura has secured an order from German buyers for 500 metric tonnes of organic ginger and 20 metric tonnes of bird’s eye chilli, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Saturday. The orders were placed during BIOFACH 2026, the international organic food trade fair held from February 10 to 13 in Nuremberg, Germany.
Nath, who attended the event, said the buyers expressed interest in Tripura’s organic produce after reviewing samples showcased at the fair. Some buyers have also indicated a willingness to visit Tripura, he added.
BIOFACH 2026 was organised under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, which leads India’s participation in the event. Nath noted that APEDA aims to raise India’s share in global organic food exports from the current 2.5 per cent to nearly 12 per cent over the next five years, with Tripura seeking to play a significant role in this growth.
The state currently has 53 organic farmer producer companies. Over 26,000 hectares of land are registered and certified organic, with more than 26,800 farmers enrolled under the organic certification system, he said.
Tripura’s organic portfolio includes aromatic rice varieties such as Kali Khasa and Hari Narayan, black rice Maimi Hangar, sticky rice Biron, bird’s eye chilli, sesame, turmeric, ginger, pineapple, and jackfruit. All products comply with international organic standards, traceability systems, and food safety norms. The state is also emphasising value addition and strengthening market linkages to enhance returns for farmers.
