Police visited Mamata AITC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s residence on Sunday (October 11, 2026) and served a notice summoning him for another round of questioning in connection with the Camac Street party office billboard case, an officer said.

This is the police’s second visit to the Diamond Harbour MP’s Kalighat house in a week for the same purpose. On October 7, Banerjee was not present at home, and no one was available to receive the notice.

This time, it was served to Banerjee’s staff at his residence, the officer said.

A team from Shakespeare Sarani police station reached Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat to serve him the notice in connection with a complaint lodged by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

The KMC had alleged that police personnel and civic workers were harassed and assaulted while attempting to remove the TMC’s signage from a building on Camac Street housing a party office last month, the officer said.

Initially, no one was ready to accept the notice. However, after some time, it was given to the MP’s staff, he said. The incident relates to a disturbance on August 27 over the removal of a billboard from a building housing Banerjee’s office on Camac Street in central Kolkata.

Police and Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials had faced protests from Mr. Banerjee’s supporters during the removal of the billboard bearing the TMC name and its twin-flower symbol.

Three FIRs were registered at Shakespeare Sarani police station in connection with the incident.

Mr. Banerjee has already been questioned in one of the cases after appearing at the police station and speaking to investigators for several hours.

Police now want to question him again in the same case.

The fire department had separately served a notice in connection with the matter.

Condemning the move of the police, Mamata AITC spokesperson and MLA Kunal Ghosh said, “The BJP (government) has stooped so low that a notice has been served even after Mahalaya when the Durga Puja is just days away.”
