Karnataka food safety officials have intensified their crackdown on food safety violations in Bengaluru, inspecting 60 hotels and collecting 77 food samples during a three-day special drive from August 7 to 9.
The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration deployed 30 teams to inspect 3-star and 5-star hotels, along with restaurants, food storage facilities and warehouses supplying major establishments.
The inspections uncovered several violations, including expired food products, mislabelling, unhygienic food handling, improper meat storage and inadequate segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian items.
Officials seized 640 kg of mutton, chicken and fish, 276 kg of rotten or mould-affected vegetables, 45 litres of expired milk and curd, 12 kg of expired bakery products, 67 kg of mislabelled or expired cereals and other food products, and 49 litres of used or non-compliant cooking oil.
The kitchen at Skyye Lounge in UB City was ordered shut after officials found rotten chicken and beef, with fungus reportedly growing on the meat. Expired milk and curd were also found. Officials disposed of 51 kg of food articles, including 45 kg of rotten meat and 6 kg of vegetable cutlets, along with 15 litres of used cooking oil.
Enforcement action was also taken at Hotel Sky, UB City, and Pegs & Bottles, while several other eateries faced seizure and disposal of food products.
At Royal Chain Hotel, officials seized 50 kg of duck and 5 kg of fish. Madras Kitchen and Tescon Hotel had 5 kg each of green peas and mushrooms seized, respectively. At Senchez Hotel, 3 kg of fish was seized and another 7 kg of cake, potatoes and tacos was discarded.
The department also inspected food storage and distribution centres operated by Coldman Logistics and Radhakrishna Foodland, which supply food products to hotels and caterers across Bengaluru. Around 70 kg of soy sauce and other sauces nearing expiry were seized, while about 10 litres of beverages nearing their expiry dates were also confiscated.
Special inspections were additionally conducted at KFC, McDonald’s and Subway outlets and their supplying warehouses. At McDonald’s Brigade Road, officials found Magnesium Sulfite being used in connection with the treatment of used frying oil. A notice has been issued and further legal action is expected.
Officials collected five meat samples and 13 other food samples from the inspected facilities and sent them for laboratory analysis.
The inspections formed part of a wider food safety drive across Bengaluru Urban district and BBMP zones. The department said legal action would be initiated against food business operators found violating food safety and quality requirements under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
