Agartala: Road repair work in the border town of Kailashahar in Tripura’s Unakoti district was halted on Monday after the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) raised objections, citing restrictions on construction near the international boundary, officials said.
The work, involving brick paving of a long-neglected road in Ward No. 9 of Kailashahar town, was underway close to the Manu River and the Manu Land Customs Station. Locals said the project had resumed only recently after remaining stalled for several months.
According to sources, BGB personnel objected to the construction, stating that no development activity is permitted within 150 yards of the international border under established boundary norms. The matter was conveyed to the Border Security Force (BSF), following which the contractor was asked to halt the work.
The sudden suspension has caused inconvenience to local residents, particularly as the road provides access to a nearby cremation ground. Locals expressed concern that the incomplete road could pose difficulties, especially during funeral processions.
The contractor executing the work said the issue had been brought to the notice of the local administration, and efforts were underway to resolve the matter in coordination with the BSF and other authorities.
Officials said discussions were underway to find a solution that balances local civic needs with compliance with international border regulations.
