On Thursday afternoon at 2:30 pm, an avalanche occurred in the upper region of the Chorabari glacier, six km behind Kedarnath. Due to accumulation of new snow in the glacier, a large part of the old snow broke and fell into a deep ravine. During this time, a cloud of snow kept flying in the Himalayan region for about five minutes. People present in Kedarnath captured this incident on mobile. District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar said that a part of the snow from the Chorabari glacier broke and fell into a deep ravine. Avalanche incidents in Chorabari and nearby glaciers are common.
This incident has happened due to rain in the lower areas and snowfall in the Himalayan region for the last several days. Such incidents keep happening due to accumulation of new snow on top of old snow in the glacier. He quoted the Sector Magistrate present in Kedarnath Dham as saying that it rained in Kedarnath in the morning. During this time there was also snowfall in the upper Himalayan region. The weather remained normal in the district after noon.
