Agartala: Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized yaba tablets worth an estimated Rs 16 crore in Tripura’s Khowai district.
The operation was launched based on specific information regarding the movement of narcotics through the district. During the late-night operation on January 24, the joint team intercepted a Tata truck on National Highway-8 and recovered 1.6 lakh yaba tablets from the vehicle.
One person, a local of Assam’s Karimganj district, was apprehended in connection with the seizure, officials said, adding that the truck used to transport the contraband was also seized.
According to officials, preliminary investigations indicated that the consignment was being moved through Tripura as part of an organised trafficking network.
The seized yaba tablets have been handed over to the DRI for further legal action, and a detailed investigation is underway to trace the source and intended destination of the narcotics.
Assam Rifles officials said the force has been conducting regular anti-drug operations across the region in coordination with central and state agencies to curb trafficking and dismantle narcotics networks operating along key transit routes.
They added that the latest seizure was part of intensified vigilance measures undertaken ahead of the Republic Day celebrations to prevent the movement of illegal substances and ensure security in the northeastern states.
Tripura has emerged as a transit corridor for drug trafficking due to its proximity to international borders and its connectivity with other parts of the region, officials said.
Law enforcement agencies have stepped up joint operations and intelligence sharing to address the challenge.
Further arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation progresses, officials said, adding that efforts are being made to identify all individuals involved in the trafficking chain.
