Assam researcher receives Ratan Tata Social Icon of India Award 2026

Aizawl: Moharana Choudhury, a researcher and environmentalist from Guwahati, Assam, was conferred the Ratan Tata Social Icon of India Award 2026 at the G.I.A. (Gurugram Industrial Association) House in Gurugram, Haryana, by the National Human Welfare Council.

Choudhury has been involved in environmental conservation initiatives in Assam and across India for over a decade. His work includes projects aimed at promoting sustainability at heritage and ecotourism sites such as Kamakhya Temple, Basistha Temple, Umanada River Island, Chandubi, and Son Beel wetlands. His initiatives focus on cleanliness, hygiene, and reducing single-use plastic pollution.

He serves as research coordinator in the Environmental Research and Management Division of Voice of Environment, a scientific and environmental research organization based in Guwahati. Choudhury contributes to environmental research, management studies, awareness campaigns, and policy recommendations. He has authored or edited over fifteen books and published more than 100 articles and book chapters in internationally recognized journals and conference proceedings, with a current H-index of 24.

 Choudhury was felicitated for his contributions to environmental conservation and scientific research alongside other awardees from Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal, Haryana, Odisha, and other states. He was the only awardee from Assam and the North-Eastern region. The award was presented by the Chairman of the Gurugram Industrial Association and members of the organizing jury, with representatives from media, education, science, and sports in attendance.

Choudhury acknowledged the recognition and said it would encourage further engagement in environmental research and community-based initiatives.
