A huge cache of arms and ammunition was seized by police in Murshidabad on Friday (November 21, 2025). The district has on multiple occasions recorded the highest number of cases of political violence. This comes as a significant development ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, as many parts of the State have previously witnessed multiple cases of pre and post-election violence.

“We had information from a source and acted on it. We waited to catch them at the right time. Two people have been arrested. We produced them in court today and got police remand for five days,” Uday Sankar Ghosh, Inspector-in-Charge of Berhrampore Police Station within the Murshidabad Police District jurisdiction told The Hindu on Friday. Police will keep them in custody and continue further questioning to get detailed information about their operations.

During the arrest police recovered eight pieces of 6.7 mm pistols, 16 pieces of empty magazine, and 100 rounds of live ammunition. They also recovered 10,000 fake Indian currency notes.

“A case has been registered at Berhampore Police Station in connection with the incident, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the other accused persons involved,” an official statement from Murshidabad Police said on Friday afternoon.

The recovery of the arms and ammunition was made near the Berhampore stadium. According to sources, the arms were smuggled in from bordering States of West Bengal.

The two arrested people are residents of Jalangi, Murshidabad district. It is not clear if they meant to smuggle the arms out of West Bengal, or if the duo were just carriers of the arms in a bigger nexus. Police are investigating all angles to get to the source of the illegal arms.

In a related development, in the Farakka area of the Murshidabad district police recovered at least 20 to 25 crude bombs, raising alarm in the area.
