Accused Ghanakanta Gogoi sent to 7-day police custody

Guwahati: The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court on Tuesday remanded Ghanakanta Gogoi, the prime accused in the sensational Hotel Bilas Inn mass shooting case, to seven days of police custody.

The police had produced Gogoi before the court and sought a 10-day remand for extensive interrogation. However, the court granted a seven-day custody period. He will be produced in court next on November 3, 2026.

The horrific incident occurred late Sunday night on October 26 at Hotel Bilas Inn, located in the Bora Service area along Guwahati’s high-security GS Road. Armed with a licensed .32-calibre pistol, Gogoi allegedly opened fire following a heated altercation, killing five people—including four members of the hotel owner’s family—and injuring another.

Guwahati Police arrested Gogoi within an hour of the bloodbath. Preliminary investigations indicate that a deep-seated dispute over the hotel’s lease agreement triggered the killings. Meanwhile, the defense counsel argued in court that the accused fired in self-defense.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to conduct a thorough probe into the mass shooting.
