Access to higher education is about more than just securing a college seat. For many students, especially those who must move away from home, finding affordable accommodation can be just as significant a hurdle.Recognising this challenge, the Madhya Pradesh government launched the Aawaas Sahayata scheme in 2016 to provide housing assistance to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students pursuing higher education outside their hometowns.Implemented by the department of tribal affairs, the scheme supports eligible students who are unable to secure a seat in a government hostel, helping ensure that financial constraints related to accommodation do not become a barrier to continuing their education.Who is eligible?The Aawaas Sahayata scheme is available to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students who are permanent residents of Madhya Pradesh and are pursuing higher education outside their hometowns. Applicants must have passed Class 12 and be enrolled in a regular undergraduate, graduate diploma, technical or paramedical course.The scheme is applicable only to students who have not been allotted accommodation in a government hostel, making it a targeted intervention for those facing housing constraints while pursuing higher education.How can students apply?Applications are processed online through the Madhya Pradesh tribal affairs automation system (MPTAAS) portal, allowing beneficiaries to register, upload documents and apply digitally.The scheme complements existing hostel infrastructure by supporting students who are unable to secure hostel accommodation.Documents requiredTo apply for the Aawaas Sahayata scheme, applicants must submit a passport-size photograph, Aadhaar card, Madhya Pradesh domicile certificate, Scheduled Tribe (ST) caste certificate, previous class passing certificate or marksheet, Samagra ID, and bank account details or a copy of the bank passbook. Applicants may also be required to furnish additional documents, if sought by the concerned authorities during the verification process.
