Hundreds of Haryana government employees in Faridabad are fighting orders that force them to arrange voluntary sterilisation. Employees of the Badshah Khan Hospital and the ESI hospital burnt effigies of the chief medical officer of Faridabad district outside his office. They plan a stronger agitation. The protest surfaced after five staff nurses of the ESI hospital were sent on deputation to Palwal civil hospital. None of them had motivated enough volunteers for sterilisation.

Fighting rages in South Yemen

Gulf sources said they had learned that President Ali Nasir Mohammed of South Yemen was seriously injured in the coup attempt. Sources in contact with the capital of South Yemen told the Associated Press that fighting was raging in the Aden port area between the rebel groups and elements loyal to the Marxist government.

Cariappa made field marshal

The first and only Commander-in-Chief of free India’s army, General K M Cariappa, will become a field marshal. The rank of field marshal, evolved in the British military tradition, is conferred on an officer of the rank of full general either serving or retired, and is for life. General Cariappa is being conferred this honour on the day that he took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Army, January 15, 1949.

Tremors in CPI-M ranks

The drastic disciplinary action by the Marxist leadership against 10 party functionaries including suspension of the crowd-collector, M V Raghavan, and the Left Democratic Front convener, P V Kunhikannan, on charges of factionalism, revisionist propensity and parliamentary opportunism, has indeed caused a tremor in the ranks of the organisation. But it will mean no more than silent resentment.
