Nightlife Damage Costs Prime Minister’s Office Over 1 Million ISK

The Prime Minister’s Office has had to pay more than one million ISK [approx. 6.839 EUR, 7.948 USD] for repairs to vehicles damaged by guests of a nearby bar, reports RÚV. The venue’s owner says this is an annoying but familiar side effect of nightlife in downtown Reykjavík.

The Prime Minister’s Office has faced significant repair costs after damage to its vehicles, believed to have been caused by guests using the outdoor seating area of Petersen Svítan, a rooftop bar on the third floor of Gamla Bíó. Glasses and bottles are reportedly dropped or thrown from the balcony, landing on the cars below. The Office had already paid over 460.000 ISK in 2023 and 714.000 ISK in 2024. The cost of the damage made in 2025 is not yet known.

In addition, vomit has had to be cleaned from the vehicles and the roof windows of the Prime Minister’s office building.

The incidents have been reported to the police.

The owner of Petersen Svítan says the problem is not limited to only his bar. According to them, you don’t have to walk far in central Reykjavík to find damage and mess left behind by high-spirited party-goers.
