We must choose a government that can say no, PM says

At a campaign rally in Eger, Prime Minister Orbán set out a clear message ahead of the election: Hungary’s future depends on preserving peace, supporting families, and maintaining economic stability in a time of growing external pressure. Reflecting on the past four years, the prime minister said the government delivered on its commitments by keeping Hungary out of the war, and he called on voters to renew that course.

Prime Minister Orbán began by thanking voters in Eger and endorsing Fidesz candidate Gábor Pajtók, describing him as a committed representative who has consistently stood up for the city and its region. He noted that Eger has long been a political stronghold and expressed confidence that it would once again contribute to victory.

Looking back, the prime minister said the government had kept its promises, most importantly by ensuring Hungary remained outside the war despite growing pressure. This, he argued, made it possible to strengthen the economy and support Hungarian society.

Prime Minister Orbán highlighted key measures for families, including the doubling of child tax benefits and the introduction of a unique tax system for mothers. “If there are children, there is a future. If there are no children, there is no future,” he said, stressing that without families, there can be no nation or strength.

He also emphasized the importance of a work-based economy in which recognition comes from performance. “The place and recognition of people should be determined by the quality of their work,” the prime minister said, adding that Hungary has restored the dignity of work and will continue to build on this foundation.

On the war, Prime Minister Orbán underlined that peace requires determination. “Not wanting war is not enough,” he said. “When there is pressure, one must be able to say no.” He called on voters to choose a government that cannot be pressured and that consistently represents Hungarian interests.

Turning to energy and economic pressure, the prime minister described the situation in concrete terms. “They are trying to force us into an economic situation whose price we would all have to pay,” he said, referring to restrictions affecting Hungary’s energy supplies. “The situation is clear: if there is oil, there is money. If there is no oil, there is no money.”

At the same time, Prime Minister Orbán addressed calls for stronger countermeasures, including limiting electricity supplies. He urged caution, noting that a significant portion of Ukraine’s electricity flows through Hungary. “The Ukrainian people are not our enemies,” he said, adding that Hungarians also live in affected areas. For this reason, he stressed that such steps should only be considered as a last resort.

In his closing remarks, Prime Minister Orbán called for unity and renewed support, emphasizing that Hungary’s ability to remain secure and stable depends on collective resolve. “We will win,” he said, expressing confidence that voters will once again back a government committed to peace, work, and national sovereignty.
