János Bóka, Minister for European Union Affairs, at the conference
Hungary can benefit from its relations with all world powers, said János Bóka, Minister for European Union Affairs, on Wednesday in Budapest at the international conference entitled “A Pivotal Year: Israel, the Middle East, the US, and Europe Come 2026”.
The Minister emphasized that dialogue is important because no one knows what the future holds for global institutions in the new, multipolar world order that is emerging or undergoing restructuring.
However, the Hungarian government may have the opportunity to gain more detailed information about what is happening in the world and why through its good international relations, which may enable it to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the changes more quickly.
Regarding the European Union’s response to global challenges, he said that the EU is currently experiencing its deepest crisis, as it has become isolated on three levels:
it has deep political disagreements with the new U.S. administration, it has no relations with Russia, and it has also become isolated from China, partly for political and partly for commercial reasons.
Another problem is that its leadership is becoming increasingly isolated from European citizens, which is coupled with a crisis of popular sovereignty and identity. This is compounded by tensions between the European Commission (EC) and individual member states, stemming from the EC’s attempts to exercise ever greater control over member states by overstepping its powers. Therefore, it would be necessary to restore the balance between the institutions, he said.
According to János Bóka, the identity crisis is caused by the fact that the EU is working to create a European identity that does not exist. It fails to recognize that European identity can only be derived from national and Judeo-Christian cultural identities and can only be discussed in a secondary sense. It does not consider national identity to be a European value, but instead defines and favors other, global values.
This is manifested in two ideological trends, political Islam and radical wokeism, which are trying and succeeding in gaining ground at the expense of consciously undermining and weakening national and Judeo-Christian values,”
said the minister.
As an example of this phenomenon, he mentioned the growing anti-Semitism in Western Europe. In his opinion, this not only offends the identity of the Jewish people living there, but also that of all European citizens. However, despite these unfavorable developments, there are only a few EU member states that not only support Israel in its fight against anti-Semitism, but also seek to build relations with it, János Bóka emphasized.
