The Ukrainian government is participating in the Hungarian elections, they are running under the name Tisza, so the stakes of the April 12 vote will be whether Ukraine or Hungary wins, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Facebook on Saturday in response to a recent post on X by his Ukrainian counterpart.

PM Orbán acting like Hitler’s henchman

The ministry said that Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha had said in his post that “by blocking Ukraine’s accession to the EU, [Prime Minister] Viktor Orbán is committing yet another crime against the Hungarian people and Hungary itself….Ukraine’s accession to the EU would bring peace closer and guarantee security and prosperity for all of Europe and for the entire Hungarian nation.“

“But this is not what Putin wants. He wants the war to continue. By blocking Ukraine’s EU membership, Orbán is fulfilling Putin’s wishes. At the same time, Orbán is blocking the restoration of peace in Europe and turning Hungary into an accomplice of the Kremlin regime,” he added.

“Today, Orbán is acting not even like Miklós Horthy, but like Hitler’s henchman Ferenc Szálasi. This is a lesson from World War II,” Sybiha said.

On the wrong side of history

“Hungary and the Hungarian people do not deserve this. Hungary does not deserve to once again find itself on the wrong side of history — as an accomplice of a new form of inhuman ideology represented by the Putin regime,” Sybiha added.

In response, Szijjártó said that “the Ukrainian foreign minister has just announced in an extremely civilised post that the Ukrainian government will run in the Hungarian parliamentary elections. Their name is Tisza.”

“They want to end Hungarian sovereignty and send Hungary to war,” he said. “So, the stakes on April 12 are Ukraine or Hungary,” he added.
