Protecting children is a national legislative responsibility, and Hungary must ensure that this objective is pursued in a fair manner compatible with European Union law, President Tamás Sulyok said on Monday.
In his statement, the head of state emphasized that safeguarding children is not only a moral obligation but also a constitutional task that requires careful legal regulation.
He pointed out that while national lawmakers have the authority to create rules in this area, they must also take into account the framework of EU law and the principle of proportionality.
Sulyok stressed that achieving a balance between domestic legal objectives and European legal standards is essential, adding that legislation must be both effective and respectful of fundamental rights.
He said that Hungary’s legal system must ensure that child protection measures are justified, necessary and proportionate, while also complying with international and European obligations.
The president concluded that well-founded legislation can strengthen both the protection of children and the credibility of the legal system.
