Hungary’s Holy Crown Body has rejected a proposal to move the Holy Crown into the plenary chamber of Parliament for the swearing-in ceremony of members of parliament, the Sándor Palace announced on Monday evening.
According to the statement, the proposal emerged during political coordination talks preparing for the inaugural session of Parliament. In line with the suggestion, the Director General of the Office of Parliament submitted a formal proposal to the Holy Crown Body.
The body was required to decide whether to approve the temporary placement and guarding of the Holy Crown in the plenary chamber of Parliament on the day of the 2026 inaugural session.
President Tamás Sulyok, acting as chairman of the Holy Crown Body, presented the proposal with his support. The body discussed the matter, but the necessary majority required for a substantive decision was not achieved, and therefore no resolution was adopted.
However, this does not exclude the possibility that, if required, the oath-taking before Parliament could still take place in the presence of the Holy Crown at its original location in the Dome Hall of Parliament, in a dignified manner and in accordance with relevant legal provisions and historical traditions, the statement quoted Sulyok as saying.
The Holy Crown Body consists of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of Parliament, the President of the Constitutional Court, the President of the Kúria, the President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the President of the Hungarian Academy of Arts. The President of the Republic serves as chairman of the body, and in the event of the chairman’s absence, the senior member of the body performs the chairman’s duties, in accordance with Act I of 2000 on the Commemoration of Saint Stephen’s State Foundation and the Holy Crown.
