New eco-friendly trolleybuses could come to Budapest

The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has paved the way for the city’s fleet to be expanded by as many as 160 new, eco-friendly, low-floor trolleybuses, should the necessary funding become available, the company said on Tuesday.

In a statement to MTI, BKK said it had signed the framework agreement for the vehicle procurement with Electrobus Europe Zrt. and Yutong, the companies that won the public tender, meaning that once the money is in place, the modernisation of Budapest’s vehicle fleet can continue, further improving the standard of public transport in the capital, the Hungarian news agency wrote.

To bring the framework agreement into force, funding for the purchase of the 40 vehicles covered by the commitment — 16 single-unit trolleybuses and 24 articulated trolleybuses — must be secured within six months of the contract being signed.

The transport organiser said it still aims to deliver the project with the help of European Union funding.
