KDNP MP: Term limit amendment aims to remove former Fidesz-KDNP MPs

According to the parliamentary group leader of the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP), the reason for amending the Basic Law is to remove former Fidesz-KDNP members of parliament from the National Assembly.

The National Assembly is expected to vote on Monday on the 17th amendment to the Basic Law, which includes, among other things, a 12-year — three-term — time limit on parliamentary mandates.

In a post published on his social media page on Sunday, Bence Rétvári recalled the words of Tisza’s State Secretary Péter Stumpf, who “blurted out the truth” in parliament and, in his assessment, also admitted that this is unprecedented in Europe. According to the KDNP group leader, the Tisza politician no longer tries to wrap the proposal in well-sounding legal principles, does not invoke the strengthening of democracy, does not manufacture ideology behind the decision, but has stated bluntly that the goal is to forcibly exclude the former Fidesz-KDNP members of parliament.

Bence Rétvári stressed that Tisza is wrong: the voters’ decision is not for ever, but for four years. They were not authorised to do anything they please, but to govern better than in the 2022–2026 term, he added.

Referring to the demonstration held in front of Sándor Palace on Thursday against the removal of the head of state, he highlighted: “Tisza’s arbitrariness” had brought tens of thousands out into the streets in the middle of summer, and if they continue like this, “there will be even more.”

The Christian Democratic politician thanked the state secretary for his “candid openness,” then stated that they nonetheless reject retroactive, tailor-made, un-European legislation that builds arbitrariness.
