Hungary Awaits: Boundless Experiences in the Western Corner of the Country

Kőszeg Castle

Head for the Kőszeg Mountains along the Austrian border and conquer the fabulous hiking trails and historical sights of the Alpokalja region. We present five places that are definitely worth seeing.

1. ÍROTTKŐ

The lookout tower on the 884-meter peak of Írottkő stands on the border between two countries: Austria and Hungary. Numerous cycling and hiking trails lead to this popular destination, famous for its silver fir forests, from where, on a clear day, you can see Lake Balaton, the Buda Hills, and the nearby peaks of the Alps.

2. ISEUM SAVARIENSE

The world-famous sanctuary complex in Szombathely is the third largest of the Roman temples dedicated to Isis. An archaeological workshop and museum have been set up on the carefully excavated ancient foundations, offering an exciting permanent exhibition for visitors interested in the past.

3. KŐSZEG CASTLE

The small medieval town of Kőszeg is also known as Hungary’s jewel box because, despite its small size, it is extremely rich in historical, cultural, and natural treasures. The core of the town was built in the 13th century, and today a museum operates within the walls of the fortress, also known as Jurisics Castle. Put on period clothing and travel back in time: the castle exhibition brings nearly 800 years of history to life, and you can even learn about the Book of the Grape Harvest, considered the bible of Kőszeg winemakers.

4. HÉTFORRÁS

The crystal-clear, cold-water spring was built in its current form in 1896. It was then named after the seven Hungarian leaders: their names can be read on small stone tablets above the babbling water. This romantic excursion destination, which is also a stamping point on the Blue Trail, is easily accessible by bike or on foot.

5. LÉKA CASTLE

Now part of Austria, Léka (Lockenhaus), once owned by Hungarian noble families, is one of the most attractive sights in the Kőszeg area. Perched on a rock surrounded by the Gyöngyös stream above a small lake, the medieval knight’s castle can be seen from afar, inviting hikers to explore. In addition to the museum, the castle building also houses a hotel, restaurant, and event center. Incidentally, it is also home to one of the largest bat colonies in Central Europe.

The 15-kilometer, moderately difficult circular tour of the Írottkő Nature Park takes you across the Austrian-Hungarian border several times without you even noticing. Starting from the center of Kőszeg, you will soon arrive at the Saint Germain cross above Rattersdorf, and the stunning panorama at the Trianon lookout point above Kőszeg will make you want to stop.
