The Holy Crown Council did not approve the proposal to move the Holy Crown to the plenary hall of the Parliament Building for the swearing-in ceremony of members of the National Assembly, the Sándor Palace informed MTI on Monday evening.
In accordance with a proposal that arose during the political consultation talks preparing for the National Assembly’s inaugural session, the Director General of the National Assembly Office submitted it to the Holy Crown Council.
Accordingly, the Holy Crown Council had to decide whether to consent to the Holy Crown being temporarily placed and safeguarded—on the day of the National Assembly’s inaugural session in 2026—in the plenary hall of the Parliament Building.
President Tamás Sulyok, in his capacity as Chairman of the Holy Crown Council, presented the proposal to the Council in support. The Council discussed the matter, but the majority required for a substantive decision was not achieved, and therefore no resolution was adopted.
This does not preclude the possibility that, if requested, the swearing-in ceremony in front of the National Assembly may take place in the presence of the Holy Crown, at its original place of safekeeping, in the dome hall of the Parliament Building, in a dignified manner, in compliance with the relevant laws and with due consideration of historical precedents, noted Tamás Sulyok in the statement.
The members of the Holy Crown Council are the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the President of the Constitutional Court, the President of the Supreme Court, the President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the President of the Hungarian Academy of Arts. The President of the Republic serves as the chair of the body. In the event that the chair is unable to perform his or her duties, the senior member of the body assumes the chair’s responsibilities, in accordance with Act I of 2000 on the commemoration of the founding of the state by Saint Stephen and the Holy Crown.
