Fireworks Regulations Tightened in Budapest

Unlike previous years, fireworks and pyrotechnic products will be prohibited throughout most of Budapest on New Year’s Eve, the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) announced on Thursday on its website.

According to their announcement, the Budapest City Council has tightened restrictions on the use of pyrotechnics for entertainment purposes in public areas of Budapest this year:

  • It is prohibited to use fireworks classified as pyrotechnic class 2 and 3 throughout Budapest before 8 p.m. on December 31, and after 2 a.m. on January 1,
  • in protected areas on December 31 and January 1 throughout the day,
  • and in highly protected areas throughout the year.

Violation of the regulation may result in an administrative fine of between 200,000 and 1.2 million forints (515-3,000 euros).

As in previous years, setting off firecrackers is prohibited and dangerous throughout Hungary all year round, and offenders can expect fines of up to 200,000 forints, the police emphasized.

The classification of public areas in Budapest is included in the capital’s announcement. The local government of Budapest’s District 12 previously published the changes on social media attaching a map.

In areas marked in white on the map, i.e., unprotected areas, pyrotechnics in class 2 and 3 are only allowed to be used on New Year’s Eve, after 8:00 p.m. on December 31 and before 2:00 a.m. on January 1. Areas marked in peach color are subject to a complete ban on December 31 and January 1. These include residential properties and the 50-meter area surrounding them.

Highly protected areas are marked in blue on the map: the use of pyrotechnics in class 2 and 3 is prohibited here throughout the year. Such areas include nature reserves, Natura 2000 sites (e.g., the entire area of Normafa Park), forests, parks, cemeteries, zoos, residential institutions, hospitals, and in some cases, their 100-meter surroundings.

The post recalls that the pyrotechnic category is always indicated on the packaging of the device. Class 2 pyrotechnics: lower noise level articles – rockets, smaller Roman candles. Class 3 pyrotechnics: higher noise level articles that provide a fireworks experience – cluster bombs, large Roman candles.
