Fidesz and KDNP walked out of parliament’s Monday session and are calling for an extraordinary meeting of the House Committee. The opposition parties left the chamber after, following Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s speech on Monday, Balázs Hankó (Fidesz) rose to speak on grounds of personal interest — but the presiding officer, Anikó Hallerné Nagy, withdrew the floor from him, citing deviation from the subject matter.

János Bóka, the Fidesz parliamentary group leader, said at a joint press conference of the two parliamentary groups that what Prime Minister Péter Magyar did in parliament today was a shame and a disgrace, and a shame and a disgrace was what the Hungarian National Assembly had become today.

“This is proof that a politically motivated show trial is being conducted against our community, and today in parliament it was not possible to speak freely about this political show trial,” he said.

He indicated that Fidesz and KDNP would also move to convene an extraordinary session of the House Committee.

Bence Rétvári, the KDNP parliamentary group leader, said that nothing like this had ever happened in the history of Hungarian parliamentarism — that a governing party majority, the presiding officer, and governing party MPs simply silenced a member of parliament who wanted to defend himself.

Following this, Balázs Hankó read out before members of the press what he had been unable to say in the chamber on grounds of personal interest.
