The national presidency and parliamentary group of Fidesz published a declaration of resistance, in which they described as illegitimate the new political system that, in their wording, the government had created in flagrant violation of the Basic Law, with the aim of holding exclusive power. In a statement sent to MTI on Tuesday, they wrote that Fidesz rejects the new authoritarian system, will not participate in the election of persons appointed to replace removed officeholders, and will review its decisions once the democratic rule of law has been restored.

After the 2026 elections, Tisza Párt changed Hungary’s constitutional order; following the 17th amendment to the Basic Law, Hungary is no longer a democratic state governed by the rule of law, and the era of authoritarianism has returned to Hungary, they stated.

“By restricting the right to vote, political competition has ceased, and with it democracy has come to an end. The President of the Republic and the President of the Constitutional Court have been removed, thereby abolishing the separation of powers; checks and balances have been eliminated and the rule of law dismantled,” they wrote.

They stressed that every citizen has the right to stand up against arbitrary rule, and that Fidesz will therefore be not only an opponent of the government but of the new political system as well. They wrote that they will make use of every peaceful means, both inside and outside parliament, to counter the arbitrary exercise of power.

They emphasized that from this day forward, their mission is to restore the democratic rule of law.

“We will assist the victims of the authoritarian regime. We will keep a record of the violations committed by the Tisza government. After the restoration of the democratic rule of law, we will provide the victims and those who have suffered harm with the redress they are entitled to,” the statement reads.

They added that, in the interest of restoring a secure and peaceful civilian life, they support everyone who raises their voice against authoritarianism and in favor of freedom, acts in solidarity with others, and stands up for the restoration of the democratic rule of law.

“No one can take away the right of Hungarians to a free, safe, and peaceful life and prosperity,” they stated.
