On March 5, the 154th anniversary of the founding of the Museum of Ethnography, visitors in Budapest can enjoy a series of free events. The birthday programs will showcase more than a century and a half of collecting, research, and knowledge transfer, which has made the institution one of Europe’s most significant ethnographic institutions today.
In the collection exhibition, a thematic guided tour presenting the Japanese and Bornean collections of naturalist and ethnographer János Xántus (1825-1894) evokes the period when the museum was founded and the significance of 19th-century scientific expeditions.
In addition, there will be several curator-led tours that provide insight into the museum’s current exhibitions.

The professional work behind the scenes will also be in focus: visitors can learn about the museum’s new exhibition archiving methodology and the dilemmas of designing an online collection database in lectures, while in the digitization workshop, they can follow live how a fragile glass negative is transformed into a high-resolution, searchable digital file.
The program also includes a book launch and a chamber exhibition on the history of science, which will be open to the general public on Ethnographic Museum Day.
