With Christmas just around the corner, visits to European Christmas markets are at the top of every traveler’s winter bucket list. According to the latest study by a European travel expert, the Christmas market on Vörösmarty Square in Budapest has proven to be the most popular Christmas market in Europe.
The latest study by European travel expert Tollwayr ranked the most popular Christmas markets in Europe in 2025, with the Christmas market on Vörösmarty Square in Budapest taking first place with a rating of 7.41/10. Second place went to the Christmas market in Strasbourg with 7.37 points, and third place went to the Vienna Christmas market with 7.06 points.
The study analyzed factors such as the number of opening days, the average cost of 3-star accommodation, Google searches, and the number of Instagram and TikTok posts to determine which markets offer the most memorable experience.
The Budapest Christmas market offers visitors excellent value for money, with the average price for 3-star accommodation at €131/night. This market is also ideal for longer stays, as it lasts a full 52 days and ends just a few hours after the New Year celebrations.
An excellent choice for travelers who want to end the 2025 Christmas season with something special and welcome 2026, the announcement said.
In addition, the market’s strong online presence demonstrates its appeal: 14,200 Instagram posts and 970 TikTok posts, as well as 15,000 Google searches per month.
Mattijs Wijnmalen, CEO of Tollwayr, commented on the results as follows:
“The Christmas market on Vörösmarty Square won first place because of its value, duration, and authentic Hungarian charm. It lasts 52 days, and the average price for 3-star accommodation is €131 per night, offering excellent value for money while maintaining a magical atmosphere. Travelers do not have to rush to visit it within a narrow time frame, as is the case with most European Christmas markets, but have almost two months to enjoy the market at their own pace.
Visitors can discover traditional Hungarian crafts such as handmade ceramics, leather goods, and glassware from nearly 60 exhibitors, while sampling authentic holiday treats such as kürtőskalács (chimney cake) and marzipan.
At the market, visitors can enjoy a free children’s train and an impressive Christmas tree surrounded by the beautiful splendor of sparkling Christmas lights. It is easy to see why it deserves first place,” said the managing director.
