Change.org petition launched urging release of journalist Carel Pedre

Overview:

A Change.org petition calling for the release of journalist Carel Pedre from ICE detention is gaining traction, with hundreds of supporters urging federal authorities to reconsider his case.

A petition to President Donald J. Trump calling for the release of Haitian journalist Carel Pedre from Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention has surpassed its initial goal, drawing more than a thousand signatures within days of launching on Change.org.

The petition, launched on Dec. 25, urges federal authorities to review Pedre’s detention and allow him to reunite with his family and community. Supporters say Pedre’s detention has caused concern among audiences who rely on his work.

“Carel has been an unwavering advocate for transparency and truth, using his platform to highlight issues that are often overlooked,” wrote the petitioner, who goes by MyEritaj and did not disclose their identity, but is based in Poughkeepsie, NY.

“His reporting has not only informed but has inspired positive change within communities that desperately need a voice. The release of Carel Pedre is imperative not only for his personal freedom but also for the restoration of his invaluable contributions to journalism and society.”

Since the petition went live, signatures have continued to grow steadily, with dozens added throughout the day.

“Please free Carel. He is someone who contributes tremendously to raise the standard in what he’s doing. He encourages youth talents and is always ready to promote excellence,” wrote one petition signer from Miami, who only identified herself by her first name, Emmanuella.

Mylda from Brooklyn wrote: “Please 🙏 release my brother; he’s useful personality in our community… Please 🙏 🙏”

While acknowledging that immigration laws are complex, the petition urges ICE to exercise discretion in Pedre’s case, emphasizing his community ties and public-facing work as outlined by supporters.

“We understand that immigration laws are complex and must be upheld; however, detaining individuals like Carel, who are contributing members of their communities, only serves to fortify unjust prejudices and hinder social progress.”
